I’m usually wary of ordering cocktails when out to eat because super sweet drinks don’t make me feel very good. So unless the bartender can (really) convince me that a drink isn’t too sugary, I’m a red wine or rosé kind of girl. Experimenting with cocktails at home though is a different story. Because I’m in control of the ingredients (#typeA) – meaning more of the healthy stuff, less of the not-so-healthy stuff (sugar, weird chemicals, fake flavors, etc.).
So when Kate from ¡Hola! Jalapeño asked me to contribute to Margarita Week I was all in. Not only are margaritas my favorite, but I love a good excuse to make weekend nights at home feel special… because you’re home! Drinking margaritas! What could be better?
These sunshine citrus kombucha margaritas are the real deal. Made with fresh orange and lime juice, a splash of kombucha for a bit of fizz and probiotics, and a spicy chili salt rim to give it a kick. They take literally 5 minutes to make and are kind of good for you. Feeling extra healthy-ish? Add a pinch of anti-inflammatory turmeric for good measure (and pretty color).
A couple of helpful notes.
This citrus juicer is the best. It’s one of those tools I never knew I needed until I got it – I use it every single day. To juice oranges, simply cut the orange into quarters and then juice each triangular piece separately.
Tequila. Make sure the bottle of tequila says 100% agave. Unless it explicitly says 100% agave, it’s considered a “mixto,” which will have additives like sugar syrup, caramel coloring, and glycerin (read: really bad hangovers). Most Jose Cuervo tequilas are mixtos (sad but true). I like Espolòn, but there a quite a few good organic brands out there too.
This post is part of #MargaritaWeek! Check out all the margarita recipes here. Personally, I can’t wait to try these Rosé Margaritas by Wood & Spoon and these Margarita Mimosas from Brewing Happiness. Enjoy!
