Kombucha margaritas: a healthy margarita recipe made with fresh lime juice and kombucha. These are fizzy, tart, and just a tad sweet.
If you’ve been following along for any amount of time, you know this: kombucha cocktails are my thing. They literally couldn’t be easier to make, they’re relatively low in sugar, and… kind of healthy.
Let’s talk kombucha margaritas. I’ve always liked an added splash of sparkling water to margaritas but since kombucha is my favorite, I used that here instead. The kombucha makes this margarita a bit fizzy, tangy and tart: properties I’ve always liked in a cocktail. Kombucha also adds an extra element of health which, of course, means you can enjoy more than one. 😉
Healthy Margaritas?
First things first: alcohol is alcohol and I’m not here to convince you that drinking is healthy (if only). But, like anything, I’m all about the #realfood upgrades. There is a very wide range of margarita recipes from the not-so-healthy (super sugary, full of artificial flavors and colors, etc.) to the kind of healthy (simple, clean ingredients). This one is the real (food) deal.
Kombucha is a lightly effervescent drink and, while there are many health claims associated with it, I like it because it’s fermented. All fermented foods contain probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria needed for digestion and proper nutrient absorption.
Fresh lime juice is high in vitamin C, which is great for the skin, digestion and is anti-inflammatory. Most commercial margaritas use a ton of refined sugar; this kombucha margarita is slightly sweetened just from the kombucha and the liquor.
How to Make Kombucha Margaritas
The process couldn’t be simpler. You’ll need flaky salt for the glasses, tequila, triple sec or Contreau, fresh lime juice, and kombucha.
Rim two glasses with salt and then grab your cocktail shaker. Add all ingredients, except for the kombucha, to the cocktail shaker with ice. Shake until the exterior frosts. Add the kombucha and gently stir.
Add ice to your glasses, if desired, and pour the kombucha margaritas over the ice. Garnish with lime slices. Cheers!
For fresh lime juice, I live and die by this trusty citrus juicer (they make one just for limes too, but I find the lemon one works well for both lemons and limes)
Kombucha Flavors
I use plain kombucha for a more classic margarita taste, but feel free to experiment with kombucha flavors! Strawberry or ginger could work really well.

Description
Kombucha margaritas: a healthy margarita recipe made with fresh lime juice and kombucha. These are fizzy, tart, and just a tad sweet.
Ingredients
- sea salt or flaky kosher salt for the rim
- 3 oz tequila
- 2 oz triple sec or Cointreau (see notes)
- 3 oz fresh lime juice (about 2–3 limes)
- 6 oz plain kombucha (or flavor of choice for a flavored margarita!)
Instructions
- Put salt on a small plate or saucer. Wet the rims of the glasses with lime juice or water and dip in the salt.
- Shake all the ingredients except the kombucha with some ice in a cocktail shaker until the exterior frosts.
- Add the kombucha and give a quick stir.
- Strain into the glasses over ice or without ice depending on preference. Garnish with lime slices, if desired.
Notes
Use 100% agave tequila (“100% de agave”) for the best-tasting margarita!
Cointreau is more alcoholic than Triple Sec. Either will work, but use Cointreau if you like a boozier tasting margarita.
